Kyiv-based correspondent through the Maidan, Crimea, and Donbas years; more than one hundred bylines on Ukraine at the Kyiv Post, Foreign Policy, Al Jazeera, and elsewhere; now U.S. State Department Russian-language spokesperson in Brussels. Ian Bateson (CC 2006) is the Foundation's Ukraine correspondent. He arrived in Kyiv around 2012 and stayed through the Maidan revolution, the annexation of Crimea, and the first years of the Donbas war, filing for the Kyiv Post, Foreign Policy, Al Jazeera, openDemocracy, The Economist's 1843, and Rest of World, among others. In July 2014 he crossed into separatist-held Donetsk on rebel accreditation to report from the MH17 crash site; in 2016 he was one of the roughly four thousand foreign journalists doxxed on Ukraine's Mirotvorets list, which he then covered as its own story in a widely-cited Foreign Policy piece on the killing of Pavel Sheremet. He wrote on Ukrainian historical memory (World Policy Journal, 2017) and on the Kvartal 95 comedy team that produced Volodymyr Zelensky (1843, 2019), and, in 2021, on Ukraine's Diia state-services app (Rest of World). He held fellowships at the Wilson Center's Kennan Institute and, on a Fulbright, at the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna. Since Russia's full-scale invasion he has served in U.S. government roles: Russian-language spokesperson and deputy director of the U.S. State Department's Brussels Regional Media Hub. That he works in five languages is, at Philolexian, the sort of thing that gets a nod rather than a paragraph.
