Philo Celebrates 135th Year; Hawkes, Edman Speakers Club Was Dramatic Society for More Than a Decade By MILTON CRANE Retiring President of Philolexian Philolexian Society celebrates ifs 135 th anniversary last Wednesday evening with a banquet at the Men's Faculty Club. Both Alumni and undergraduates attended the reunion of the third oldest college literary society in America. As the feature of the festivites, Philo elected three honorary members: Dean Herbert E. Hawkes, Irwin Edman, professor of Philosophy, and Lionel Trilling, instructor in English. Milton Crane '37, retiring president of the Society, presided at the banquet and proposed the election of the guests. PHILO ORATORS IN CENTENNIAL CONTEST Society Holds Important Function in Earl Hall Friday—"Patriotism" Subject of Speeches One of the year's biggest social events at the University takes place on Friday night, when the Philolexian Society holds its quadrennial speaking contest for what is known as the "Centennial Prize." Six of the society's best speakers will compete, the subjects being confined to questions involving American patriotism. The Centennial Prize competition was inaugurated in 1902, when Philo celebrated its one hundredth birthday. At that time a fund was established to carry on the contest in honor of the celebration, and since that time three contests have been held. Black 'l6 won the Coles Prize in Oratory at Philolexian's quadrennial contest in Earl Hall last night, competing against five of the Society s best speakers. Black spoke on "The Great Collaboration." DE GRAY IS AWARDED CUTTING FELLOWSHIP Four Others Awarded Traveling Scholarships for 1925-1926. Cutting Traveling Fellowships awards for 1925-1926 were announced Saturday by Secretary Fackenthal. They will go to Julian H. De Gray '25, Hoxie Neale Fairchild 'l7, Herbert Lionel Matthews '22, Gerald T. Robinson '22 and Henry Gerard Wood '24 L. The Fellowships have a minimum value of $l,OOO and are among the most highly prized of the University's honors, De Gray is now a senior in the College. He has specialized in music and for three years has been accompanist for the Glee Club.
