Editor-in-Chief of Knopf; Editor of The New Yorker; editor of Heller, Morrison, le Carré, Caro. Robert Gottlieb (CC 1952) was the editor whose authors were so famous that one identifies him backwards from them: Heller, Morrison, le Carré, Caro, Lessing. He ran Simon & Schuster, then Knopf; in 1987 succeeded William Shawn at The New Yorker, the most thankless transition in twentieth-century publishing, and survived it. His only fault as a Knopf editor was a tendency to recommend ballet criticism. The firms continued to thrive on the rest of his judgment.

1951-05-11 Literary Group Offers Award For Best Talk [ARTICLE] next year's president
Literary Group Offers Award For Best Talk An award of $l5O will be presented by the Philolexian Society for the best oration on the subject "Experience of Possibility in American Life." Four to six members of the society will deliver speeches Monday at 3:15 P.M. in Harkness Theater. The public is invited to attend. The contest, which will be judged by Professor Jacques Barzun, is held every four years to elicit the best oration on a patriotic subject. Originally the prize was the Houdon bust* of George Washington. Since this is no longer available, the cash is given instead. The Philolexian Society is a literary . group at Col umb i a founded by Alexander Hamilton. This year's president is Richard Howard and next- year's ,is Robert Gottlieb.

Robert Gottlieb '52, Wins Literary Oratorial Contest Robert Gottlieb '52 was judged 5 by Prof. Jacque Barzun of the History Department to have given the best oration on"The Possibility of Experience" in the Philolexian Oratorical Cdntest held yesterday as Harkness Theatre. Gottlieb, who received a $l5O award, concerned himself with the problem That faces the American citizen of today. This country, he stated has no well defined tradition which can prove a guide to our future actions as do our European contemporaries. This fact, he felt, was important, in that it provided unlimited area for an expansion of experience of possibility. "Innocence and freshness is not so much what we need today," he remarked.
