DEBATING AND ORATORY Development at Columbia of these Branches of College Activity Ever since the founding of Kings College one hundred and fifty years ago, debating and oratory have occupied foremost places among the non-athletic activities at what is now Columbia University. Stories have been handed down from the newspapers of pre-Revolution-ary days of the forensic contests between the students of King's College. These contests were usually held in some public hall and were attended by a large number of the citizens of New York. At first they were under the control of the College authorities, but ifv soon fell under the management of a newly formed literary society. Just when this society was first organized, it is difficult to say, but in Holt's New York Journal, of May 17, 1768, there is an account of the nth Annual Commencement of King's College, in which it is stated that as…

1916-03-28 PRESIDENTS OF COLUMBIA elected President of Columbia

PRESIDENTS OF COLUMBIA After the resignation of President Johnson, the Trustees did not elect a successor until the following year. On May 25th, 1801, the Rev. Dr. Charles H. Wharton, Rector of St. Mary's Church at Burlington, New Jersey, accepted the office but resigned on December 11th of the same year, owing to an apparently unknown cause. On the 30th of December a committee appointed to "consider and report respecting the office of President" reported that the President should be relieved from his professorship and be charged merely with "a general Superintendence of the Institution and....that there be a distinct Professor of Moral Philosophy. Rhetoric, Bellelettres and Logic." The day after this report the Right Reverend Benjamin Moore '6B, Bishop of New York, was elected President.
