Are We to Have a Joint Debate this Year ? T used to be a custom at Columbia that once every year, usually some time during the month of April, each of the literary societies of the college— Philolexian, Peithologian, and Barnardshould present two competitors for a public debate on some question of recognized interest. The judges, who were always men of distinction, after rendering their decision as to the merits of the debate, awarded to the man whom they considered to have made the best individual speech first "honorable mention," and the next best speaker, second "honorable mention." To obtain an "honorable mention" was accounted a very great honor and the competition was always very spirited. News of the Literary Societies. various literary societies of the college have now all settled down to earnest, regular work, and the time seems opportune for discussing their condition and their chances for a prosperous year. They have all shown a commendable activity in getting new men to take the places of the men graduated last June, and they are all under excellent management, so that, unless indications fail, they will all do good work this year. The Columbia Debating Union, although only entering upon the second year of its existence, has already demonstrated the need of its being, and, in order to encourage and stimulate interest in literary work, has decided to hold a joint debate this fall in addition to the usual one in the spring. About College There are vacancies on the SPECTATOR Board. Under classmen, both Arts and Mines, are especially urged to compete. The Employees Ball was held at Brady's dancing academy on the evening of February 21 st. Professor Singer, of the Department of Janitorial Philosophy, led the cotillion in his usual inimitable manner and was universally admired for the fairylike grace of his movements. The anniversary of the day on which the Father of his Country was born was already several hours old before the gay and festive assembly broke up. The ball was voted a great success by all who were fortunate enough to be present. It was only with the greatest difficulty that the sporting editor of the SPECTATOR was able to procure one of the muchcoveted tickets. About College W. B. Crowell, '96 Z,., has been looking for candidates for the Crescent eleven among Columbia's athletes. '97 Mines has elected its representatives to the '97 Columbian board. About College A great deal of interest is being taken in debating this year. The officers of the Union, composed of three members from Barnard and three from Philolexian, have been attempting for some time to elect officers. They are awaiting the appointment of a Freshman representative to release the dead-lock. Professor Hallock, of the Physics Department, has recently received a sum of money from Secretary Eangley, of the Smithsonian Institute, for the purpose of carrying on the investigations in acoustics, which Professor Hallock has undertaken. The money comes from the well known Hodgkins Fund. An elaborate system of electrical clocks and bells, to ring at the beginning and end of every lecture hour, is being put through all the University buildings. PLANS BEING MADE FOR '26 CLASS DAY Date Is Fixed for May 31— Commencement Day Changed to June 1. Definite plans for the Class Day ceremonies were anounced yesterday by Hugh J.
