T.S. Eliot scholar (retired professor). Born Atlanta, September 6, 1923; four-time Georgia state high-school Latin champion. Entered Columbia on full scholarship; Debate Council, Jester and Columbia Review writer. B.A. with honors in English literature; M.A. (1945) and Ph.D. (1950) in English and comparative literature, GSAS. Alexander M. Proudfit Fellow in Letters 1945-46. Taught at Rutgers and Yale, then 41 years at Duke (retired 1993). Held Guggenheim and NEH fellowships. President of The T.S. Eliot Society, 1989-91. Died June 10, 2014, in Durham, NC.

1944-06-02 Eighteen Students Named In Philolexian Election currently active on campus
Eighteen Students Named In Philolexian Election Philolexian elections of eighteen new students, raising membership in the one hundred and forty-two year, old society, third oldest college literary group in America, to twenty-seven, took place recently under the guidance of Theodore Hoffman, retiring chairman. ' During the meeting Walter Adams was named chairman protem until the society could become reorganized sufficiently to hold a definite election. Plans are under way for a Philolexian editorial board to run Jester-Re-view, although this does not eliminate outside contributions. 1944-06-16 Smith, Hoffman Win Philolexion Prizes won the annual Philolexian prize for prose/poetry
Smith, Hoffman Win Philolexion Prizes Grover Smith Jr. and Theodore Hoffman won the annual prizes awarded by the Philolexian Society for outstanding work in prose and poetry respectively it was announced late last week by Professor Henry K. Dick of the Department of English. Smith's group of poems, including the prize winner, "The Unloved," was chosen above all others submitted, netting him approximately $3O. Hoffman, editor-in-chief of Jester-Review, won the prose prize with his story entitled "A Bout With The Beasles."
