Maya explorer; founder and first president of the Panama Railroad. John Lloyd Stephens (CC 1822) entered Columbia at thirteen, left first in his class, explored Central America, and founded the Panama Railroad. With the English draughtsman Frederick Catherwood he tramped Copán, Palenque, and Chichén Itzá, returning with the books that made Maya civilization legible to a North American readership and disposed, at long last, of the theory that the cities had been built by wandering Phoenicians.
