In service to the Philolexian Society of Columbia University · Founded MDCCCII
About · IV.
The real Society, where all the action happens, which will become a source of nostalgia for the students as they gracefully age into Philolexian Geezers and join the Foundation.
Day-to-day, Philolexian is a student society. It is run by current Columbia and Barnard undergraduates, recognized by Columbia University, and listed as the oldest student organization in the College's official student-group directories. Per the University's own characterization: "Philo is Columbia University's oldest and classiest student organization."
The Society meets every Thursday during the academic term, in a Columbia campus location that changes from semester to semester but whose dignity does not. Membership is open by invitation following participation in a meeting; the Society is officially mixed-gender (the male-only stipulation, defunct in practice since the 1985 refounding, was formally removed by the 2003 constitutional convention).
Per the Constitution, the Society is run by a Moderator and an inventive bureaucracy that exceeds the strict needs of a literary society and is the better for it.
Current students interested in attending a meeting are best served by joining the Whip List, the Society's announcement mailing list, where the meeting location is posted each week.
The Foundation stewards funds for the student Society, the awards program, and the search for a permanent home. Every gift is tax-deductible.
