Jay Professor of Greek; lexicographer; author of the standard nineteenth-century American Latin textbooks. Charles Anthon (CC 1815) held Columbia's Jay Professorship of Greek from 1830 until his death in 1867 and produced, for a generation of American schoolboys learning Latin, the standard textbooks. A Copious and Critical English-Latin Lexicon (1856) made him the most-published American classicist of the nineteenth century; his school editions of Cicero, Horace, and Caesar went through printing after printing. He preferred his classical texts unabridged and his lexicons unforgiving, and as a result furnished most of what nineteenth-century America knew about the classics.

80th Anniversary of the Philolexian Society. A PLEASANT change in the usual form of the meetings of Philolex. was made on Thursday evening, May nth. Instead of the customary literary exercises held at the hall of the Society, a dinner at Martinelli's was substituted in order to celebrate the " Eightieth Anniversary " of the Society's foundation. The " Committee of Arrangements," Messrs. William S. Sloan, 'B2, Chairman , Girard F. Thomson, 'B3, and Herbert L. Satterlee, 'B3, labored to make the evening successful under a series of misfortunes. The date chosen, the only available night before examinations, happened to coincide with the date set for the New York Bar Association's reception, tendered to Judge Samuel A. Blatchford, one of the Society's graduate members, and many of the Alumni who are in the legal profession were thus unable to be present at the dinner. Congressional…

The Revival of Philolex LUMNI and undergraduates will be pleased to learn of the rejuvenation of the Philolexian Society, the oldest literary association at Columbia. The apathy into which it had fallen during the past two years gave way last spring to a complete reorganization. The entire membership of the Hamilton Literary Society, a new and vigorous organization, was at that time absorbed and incorporated in the old association. New officers were elected as follows : President, A. C. Phillips; Vice-President, W. C. Rhoades ; Secretary, R. A. McCulloeh ; Treasurer, H. S. Emerson. The Philolexian is, therefore, at once the oldest and the newest literary society, combining with its own prestige and distinction the enthusiasm and energy of the younger association. TRADITIONS OF COLUMBIA Dean Keppel Speaks on Past of the University and Ideals to be Maintained As a special feature of yesterday's regular Tuesday Chapel service, Dean Keppel addressed a large assemblage of undergraduates on the subject of Columbia T and Ideals." The Dean spoke as follows: —. "A man's development in College and University is a many-sided thing, but there are two broad sides to it. There is, in the first place, his own individual development.
