Physician, scholar, author, and philanthropist. Born in Amsterdam July 18, 1800; died in New York 1843. Educated in Curaçao under Professor Strebeck; graduated Columbia College at age 16; earned M.D. 1819 under Dr. David Hosack (formerly physician to Washington). Editor of the New York Medical and Physical Journal, Gregory's Practice (1825–26), The True American (pro-Andrew Jackson), and the New York Mirror. Great-grandfather of Arthur Hays Sulzberger (New York Times publisher, 1935-1961) via his granddaughter Rachel Peixotto Hays.
