Philolexian. meeting was called to order at 8.15, p. M., April 1 st; the President in the chair. As this was the meeting at which the Philolexian Oratorical Prize is annually contested for, the usual order of business was suspended, and the Society proceeded to the oratorical contest. The first speaker was Mr. Moore, whose subject was " Horatius and the Captive." Mr. Bull followed with " Earl Chatham on the Employment of Indians in American Warfare." 'T'HE Philolexian Prize Debate was contested at the regular meeting of the society on Thursday, April the Bth, The subject, " Resolved, that the policy of the Monroe Doctrine ought to be adhered to by the United States," required no small knowledge of the relations of governments, and was a difficult one to treat. The meeting was called to order by the President at 8:30, and the society immediately proceeded to the Prize Debate, which was opened by Mr. Harvey, 'B2, on the negative. Mr. Whitney, 'B3, followed on the affirmative. The negative was then supported by Mr. Livingston, 'BO, and the list was closed by Mr. H. Parsons, 82, on the affirmative. Philolexian. Thursday, April 7th, the annual competition for the prizes in oratory took place at the hall of the society. That portion of the interest of the Philolexian Prize Fund set apart for prizes in oratory amounts to thirty-five dollars, which is divided in the following manner : a first prize of twenty dollars, a second prize of ten dollars, and a third of five dollars. The exercises were well attended, several members of other societies being present as invited guests. Seven members entered into the competition, namely: Messrs. A. D. Henry, 'B4; H. L. Philolexian. last regular meeting of the Society was held at its rooms, 64 Madison avenue, on the evening of Thursday, the 26th inst. The President, J. Duane Livingston, 'BO, presided. The regular order of business was suspended, by vote, and the annual elections were declared in order. The balloting resulted as follows : President, H. L. The Philolex. Prizes. HTHE contest for the Oratorical Prize of the Philolexian Society was held at its rooms on Thursday evening, April 6th. As it was a special meeting the usual order of business was suspended, and the Society listened to the orations. The speakers were Messrs. J. B. Nies, 'B2; A. D. Henry, 'B4; W. K. Otis, 'B2; J. M. Wainwright, 'B4; and E. L. Ryder, 'B2. After the orations the judges, Messrs. W. Barclay Parsons, Jr., '79; J. Duane Livingston, '80; and Doctor John D. Quackenbos, announced that the first prize of $2O was awarded to Mr. Nies; the second, of $lO, to Mr. Ryder; and the third, of $5, to Mr. Henry. In announcing this decision Dr. Quackenbos complimented the Society on the work it is doing in promoting the practice of declamation, which is so sadly neglected at College. 80th Anniversary of the Philolexian Society. A PLEASANT change in the usual form of the meetings of Philolex. was made on Thursday evening, May nth. Instead of the customary literary exercises held at the hall of the Society, a dinner at Martinelli's was substituted in order to celebrate the " Eightieth Anniversary " of the Society's foundation. The " Committee of Arrangements," Messrs. William S. Sloan, 'B2, Chairman , Girard F. Thomson, 'B3, and Herbert L. Satterlee, 'B3, labored to make the evening successful under a series of misfortunes. The date chosen, the only available night before examinations, happened to coincide with the date set for the New York Bar Association's reception, tendered to Judge Samuel A.
