First-generation anti-monopoly journalist; Wealth Against Commonwealth (1894). Henry Demarest Lloyd (CC 1867) wrote the muckraking exposé that Ida Tarbell would later make famous: The Atlantic's March 1881 attack on Standard Oil, twenty-one years before McClure's. He extended the argument into Wealth Against Commonwealth (1894), his attack on the power of the great corporate trusts. He was also a sentimental reformer who tried to live in a Cotswold cottage on Lake Michigan; he is forgiven this on the strength of the prose.
