Philolexian. THE PRIZE CONTESTS. J 'HE last meeting of the Philolexian Society was one of the most enthusiastic and interesting that has been held this year. The question of debate: " Resolved, That the good accomplished by the crusades overbalanced the evil " was warmly contested, and the orations were listened to with great attention. During " Miscellaneous Business," the Judges of the prize contests were elected and are as follows : Judges of Debate : Prof. J. Howard Van Amringe, Prof. Archibald Alexander and Mr. George C. Kobbe, '74. Judges of Orations: Dr. John D. Quackenbos, Mr. W. Barclay Parsons, Jr., '79, and Mr. James Duane Livingston, 'BO. AT a meeting of the Base-Ball Association, held Tuesday, March 19th, Mr. Bangs, 78 in the chair, a Constitution and By-Laws were adopted, the Association was named the " Columbia College BaseBall Association," and the following officers were elected : DIRECTORS: Mr. C. ABOUT COLLEGE. Philolexia. The Prize Debate. THE SPECTATOR WINS ! ! THE Annual Prize Debate of the Philolexian Literary Society took place at the Mott Memorial Hall, on Thursday evening, April 11 th. The question for debate was : " Resotved, That a suffrage based on property or educational qualifications should be introduced into this country." Mr. Spalding opened the debate on the affirmative, followed by Mr. Paine on the negative. Mr. Hildreth then debated on the affirmative, followed by Messrs. Parsons and Bliven, both on the the same side. After a short discussion the judges awarded the first prize of $lO.OO to Mr. Parsons, and the second prize of $5.00 to Mr. Spalding, both of the SPECTATOR board. Philolexian. 'T'HE Philolexian Prize Debate was contested at the regular meeting of the society on Thursday, April the Bth, The subject, " Resolved, that the policy of the Monroe Doctrine ought to be adhered to by the United States," required no small knowledge of the relations of governments, and was a difficult one to treat. The meeting was called to order by the President at 8:30, and the society immediately proceeded to the Prize Debate, which was opened by Mr. Harvey, 'B2, on the negative. Mr. Whitney, 'B3, followed on the affirmative. The negative was then supported by Mr. Livingston, 'BO, and the list was closed by Mr. H. Parsons, 82, on the affirmative. After consultation, the judges, Mr. Geo. Kobbe, '74, and Mr. J. T. Goodwin, '76, decided that the first prize be awarded to Mr. Parsons, and the second to Mr. Livingston. 1884-04-10 Philolexian Prize Contests. [ARTICLE] scheduled judge who did not appear
Philolexian Prize Contests. Thursday evening, April 3d, eight members of the Philolexian Society engaged in a prize contest in oratory. The judges, Dr. Quackenbos, '6B, and Messrs. Clarence R. Conger, '7l, and H. L. Mills, 'Bl, failed to put in an appearance, and after waiting for them an hour Messrs. Thomson, 'B3 ; Tears, 'B4, and Bouvier, 'B6, were selected to act in their places. The speakers were Messrs. Cushman, Henry, Taylor, Wainwright, 'B4 ; Mr. McCormack, 'B6 ; and Messrs. Nash, Patterson and Whiting, 'B7. The first prize of twenty dollars, the judges awarded to Mr. Nash, whose selection was a piece in verse, " The Legend of the Organ Builder." Mr. Wainwright received the second prize of ten dollars ; and Mr. Henry, the third.
