Giroux Elected Head Of Philolexian Society Robert Giroux '36 was elected president of the Philolexian Society for 1935-3 6 at the organization's meeting last evening. John Berryman '3 6 was chosen vicepresident and Milton Crane '3 7, secretary-treasurer. Ber ryman was also named chairman of the Boar's Head poetry society for next year. A new office, permanent president, was incorporated in Philolexian, and Graham P. Singer '35 elected to fill the position as a member of the present graduating class. Giroux. upon taking office, said that "if, by next year, I shall have succeeded in removing the stereotype which I believe to exist about Philolexian. I shall consider myself a good president."

Wechsler In the 1935 Columbian, dominating the space normally reserved for Spectator reveries, instead a four-page story titled "Pro and Con" appeared. James Wechsler, Editor-in-Chief wrote the section under the heading of "Pro." In defending Spectator policy Wechsler wrote, "So long as an independent student press defends the rights and aspiration of the student body, it must risk the enmity of those whose social role is of another character." Fadiman to Talk To Philo Tonight Barnard Literary Society Expected to Attend Hartley Meeting Clifton Fadiman, Columbia '25, boolc editor of The New Yorker, will be the guest speaker at the regular meeting of Philolexian Society tonight at 8 o'clock in the Hartley Hall Club Room. Philolexian Sets May 4 as Deadline For Literary Prize The deadline for contributions to the annual Philolexian prose and poetry contest will be Monday, May 4, it was announced last night by John McAlpin Berryman '36, president of TTie Society. The judges will be Irwin Edman, professor of Philosophy, and Raymond M. Weaver, assistant professor of English. With Berryman's assistance, Mr. Giroux revived the Boar's Head poetry society, which sponsored readings, lectures, and a faculty-judged prize contest for the best stories and poems written by an undergraduate. They did the same with Philolexian, the ancient literary society, which goes back to Alexander Hamilton and King's College. In Columbia Review, which Mr. Giroux edited, Berryman's reviews and poems began to appear — among such other editorial coups as a review by the philosopher John Dewey of George Santayana's novel The Last Puritan. Mr. Giroux himself won the Boar's Head fiction prize one year. But when he became editor of Columbia Review he realized his true vocation: what he really wanted to do was to edit other people's books.

Yeats, given surrounding context on Yeats's plays and Blackmur) to his fellow Philolexians and Boar's Head Poetry Society members. The same passage mentions inviting R. P. Blackmur ('Boston my nervous invitation') to the Society's annual Poetry Reading and having 'Mark' (Van Doren) review Blackmur's The Double Agent.
