Manhattan Project physicist; chair of physics at Rochester; eighth President of CCNY. Robert E. Marshak (CC 1936) entered Columbia at sixteen, took his Cornell PhD at twenty-three, and spent the war years on the Manhattan Project's Theoretical Division at Los Alamos. He went on to chair the physics department at Rochester for two decades (where the annual "Rochester Conferences" became the defining gathering of the world's particle physicists) and served as the eighth president of CCNY through the open-admissions era. He drowned while swimming off Cancún in 1992; what survives is the V-A theory of weak interactions, which he and George Sudarshan formulated a step before Feynman and Gell-Mann arrived at the same result.
