PHILO AND BARNARD LIT DEBATE WOMAN SUFFRAGE Judges Decide in Favor of Barnard by Majority Vote—Both Present Good Cases In a closely fought contest held last evening in Earl Hall, Barnard Lit was awarded the decision over Philolexian in the debate on Woman Suffrage. The question as stated read: Resolved, that the Fifteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution should be changed to read —"The right of citizens of the U.S. to vote shall not be denied or abridged on account of race, color, sex or previous condition of servitude." PHILO IN OLD-TIME SESSION Discussed Proportional Representation Meeting last evening for the first time in its new Room, 305 Library, the Philolexian Society held an interesting session and general celebration. A committee consisting of J. A. Murphy 'l5, F. G. Dunham 'l5 and P. E. Barker 'l6 was appointed to take charge of the arrangements for the Curtis Medal Contest which is held under Philo auspices this year. PHILO ORATORS IN CENTENNIAL CONTEST Society Holds Important Function in Earl Hall Friday—"Patriotism" Subject of Speeches One of the year's biggest social events at the University takes place on Friday night, when the Philolexian Society holds its quadrennial speaking contest for what is known as the "Centennial Prize." Six of the society's best speakers will compete, the subjects being confined to questions involving American patriotism. The Centennial Prize competition was inaugurated in 1902, when Philo celebrated its one hundredth birthday. At that time a fund was established to carry on the contest in honor of the celebration, and since that time three contests have been held. PHILO TO CELEBRATE TIME HONORED DEBATE Six Best Speakers of Philo Compete Tonight for Bust of Washington— Third Quadrennial Contest When, at 8:00 o'clock tonight, the six best speakers of the Philolexian Society compete in Earl Hall for the bronze bust of Washington, the third quadrennial speaking contest will be under way. This is one of the social events of the University year and always arouses a great deal of interest among the campus orators. Mr. Dixon Ryan Fox who won the prize four years ago, will preside. BLACK '16 WINS IN PHILO CONTEST Debater Awarded Coles Prize — H. N. Fairchild '16 Second, E. M. Earle '17 Third BIG SOCIAL SUCCESS D. M. Black 'l6 won the Coles Prize in Oratory at Philolexian's quadrennial contest in Earl Hall last night, competing against five of the Society s best speakers. Black spoke on "The Great Collaboration." Second place was awarded to H. N. Fairchild 16, who spoke on "Votes for Women in 1915" and third place went to E. M. Earle 'l7, who chose as his subject "The United States and Peace." The Coles prize is a magnificent bust of George Washington by Jean Houdon, the celebrated French sculptor, a bronze cast of which is made in France every four years for the Society. PHILOLEXIAN SHOW CAST IS CHOSEN Annual Performance of Society Will be Presented November 19th and 20th. With the exception of two unimportant parts which will be assigned at the rehearsals next week the cast for the the Philolexian show, "The Spanish Tragedy," which is to be given in Brickerhoff Hall on the evenings of November 19th and 20th, has been chosen. Only ten more rehearsals will be held before the play is finally staged.
