News of the death of Lieutenant Spencer Williams came as quite a shock to the men on the campus who knew him before he enlisted in the army as an aviator. Just how the collision occurred that caused the death of Williams and the pilot of another machine no one really knows as the information regarding the accident in indefinite. With a record of defeats before them at the beginning of this year the debating authorities decided that new methods must be introduced. The Debating Council, consisting of A. W. MacMahon, Pg., R. R. They had an idea the Columbia Debating Coach should be a professional coach, an experienced one and moreover, a winning one. Success was the result of their endeavors. PHILO WILL DEBATE PHILOMATHEAN AGAIN The New Columbia Spirit and Proposed Revival of Monthly Subjects of Discussion Spirited discussion was the keynote running through the business and literary program of the Philolexian meeting last night. The first business to which the society gave its attention was the annual debate with the Philomathean Society of Pennsylvania. Philomathean had proposed the question of increased armament which the Varsity debating team successfully argued in the triangular debate with Penn and Cornell a few weeks ago. As the visiting team customarily takes the negative side of the question, this gives the Columbia society the side which won in all three debates of the Varsity meet. HEAVY FIRST DAY VOTE IN S. B. ELECTIONS Every Registered Student in the University Entitled to Cast a Vote. Yesterday's vote for the Student Board was quite heavy. The voting will remain open today and tomorrow and every student should make it a point to cast his vote. The polls are open in the Trophy Room of Earl Hall from 9:00 A. M. to 5:00 P. M. Owing to some confusion as to the eligibility of voters, the Student Board announced yesterday that all students registered in the University are eligible to vote. This included Law men as well. No restriction is made as to what school a man comes from. All voters must vote for six men and any ballots having more or less than six names indicated will be thrown out. NO SLUMP AS YET IN HEAVY VOTING All Members of University Except Extension Students Allowed to Vote. POLLS CLOSE AT 5:00 P. M. Much more interest has been shown in the Student Board elections this year was manifested last year in the same time. On the first day of the elections this year a total of 359 votes were cast which is more than twice as many as last year, when the vote was only 159. The number of votes cast on the first day this year surpasses the record for many years past. Yesterday's vote was somewhat smaller since only 223 ballots were cast. This is, however, nearly as large a figure as last year when 271 people voted on the second day. Last year's total for the first two days of the elections is far below that of this year.
