PRIZE ORATIONS TO-NIGHT First Contest for Philolexian Washington Prize—Six Competitors This evening at 8:15 in Earl Hall, the Philolexian Society will hold the first contest for the Philolexian Washington Prize. The fund was established for the society by J. Ackerman Coles '64, and the prize is a copy of the life size bronze bust of Washington, modelled from life at Mount Vernon, by Jean Antoine Hou don. COLES PRIZE ORATIONS Six Contestants Speak for Philolexian Prize—Awarded to F. A. Higgins Philolexian Society held the first contest for the Philolexian Washington Frize in Earl Hall last night. The speeches, of course, were original and distinctly patriotic in character. No one but a member of Philolexian Society was eligible to speak for the prize. The prize itself was given by a Philolexian alumnus, J. Coles '64, '6B (P. & S.). and consists of a recently imported replica life size Barbedienne bronze bust of George Washington, taken from life, while Washington was at Mount Vernon, by Jean Antione Houdon in 1788. The prize was imported by Tiffany's bronze department. Candidates Speak for Philo Philolexian held the most successful meeting of the year last night in Earl Hall when admission to the society was thrown open to Freshmen. The following Freshmen spoke for admission: T. C. Morgan, C. Hershenstein, V. K. W. Koo, D. Armstrong, W. H. Sellew, McA. Coleman, A. S. Moses, G. Hawley, W. H. D. Pell. Following these speeches, the annual oratorical contest was held. The speeches were of a high character and well delivered. C. L. Williams 1906 was awarded first prize for his oration on "Reform in American Politics." The second prize was won by P. B. Tripp 1906, with "The Revolution in China," and W. M. Schwarz 1907 was third, speaking on "The Adams Family as Statesmen." Mr. A. deV. Tassin acted as judge. After the literary program had been completed, an informal social meeting was held, during which refreshments were served.

PHILO TO DEBATE PENN Philomathean Challenge Accepted— Will Discuss Inheritance Tax Philolexian Society has accepted a challenge from the Philomathean Society of the University of Pennsylvania to hold a debate on the question, "Resolved. that Congress should impose a progressive inheritance tax, constitutionality conceded." The contest will take place in Price Hall, the Pennsylvania Law School building, Philadelphia, on the evening of December 6. It is not yet decided which side the Columbia men will take. Trials for the team to represent Philolexian Society will take place on Wednesday, November 20, at 8 p. m. This is probably only the first of a series of annual debates and promises to assume almost the proportions of an intercollegiate contest, so it is important that a large number of men report for the trials. Philolexian Dinner at Columbia Club This evening at 7 o'clock. Philolexian Society will hold its one hundred and fifth annual dinner in the Columbia University Club, 18 Gramercy Park. At this dinner the election of officers to serve for the coming semester will be held. The following have been nominated and seconded: F. R. Swartwout 'OB for president; McA. Philolexian Dinner and Election Philolexian Society held its annual dinner yesterday evening at 7:30 at the Columbia University Club. The dinner was most successful, as there was a good attendance—there being eighteen active members and five alumni present. Immediately after the dinner, President E. C. Rouse 'OB called a business meeting to elect the officers to serve for the coming semester. As there was only one candidate for each office, the elections were unanimous, and the following -men were chosen: F. R. Swartwout 'OB, president; McA. Coleman 'O9. vice-president; W. H. Following the business meeting, short speeches on various subjects relative to Philolexian Society were made by the newly elected officers, and by the alumni present. ANNUAL VARSITY DEBATES Intercollegiate League Contests ToNight—Penn at Horace Mann After six weeks of hard preparation, the work of the Varsity debating teams under the direction of Coach Houston will culminate when they Pennsylvania and Cornell this evening in the debates of the triangular intercollegiate league. A series of discussions on contemporary American authors is to be followed by the consideration of famous actors and playwrights. CUP FOR DEBATING CHAMPION Pennsylvania to Receive Trophy Delegates from Pennsylvania, Cornell and Columbia were present at a meeting of the Triangular debating league held at 616 West 113 th Street yesterday. Tt was decided to purchase a debating trophy, like the chess trophy, to be held bv the winners in the league each year. This trophy will consist of a large silver cup upon which the name of the winning team will be engraved. Columbia has won once since 1904 Cornell twice and Pennsylvania three times. At this meeting Pennsylvania was formally conceded the championship for; 1909 her team having defeated Cornell and Columbia on Friday night.
