Burke, Doscher Elected To Philo Offices Philolexian Society elected John Burke '32 last night to fill the office of president made vacant by the resignation of Roy Miner. William Doscher '32 was chosen vice-president, that position having fallen vacant through lapse on the part of Joseph Danysh '3l in attending meetings of the society. Burke is a member of the Debate Squad, and president of the Civic League, campus non-partisan organization. He won the quadrennial Philo prize which was given last year. The society will hold a tea tomorrow at 4:30 P.M. at which Professor Raymond Weaver will be present. According to Burke, Philo will make a strenuous atempt this year to strengthen its position as a leader of campus thought.

Philolexian Will Try Experiment At Meeting of Modern Verse Candlelight and Masks to Be Used at Unique Gathering in John Jay Tonight-Noted Pieces Will Be Read at Novel Poetry Recital Student members of Philolexian Society will read selections from modern American poetry at an experimental meeting of the organization in the John Jay Meeting Room at 8:30 o'clock tonight. Music, Masks and Candlesticks Add Color To Poetry Reading in Philo Experiment "The rain it is a welcome sound "To one who's six feet underground" mused the poet as the piano tinkled brightly to suggest the patter of raindrops. Philolexian's experiment in revitalizing the recitation of poetry last night was skillfully executed in the John Jay meeting room, with R. Elliott Brock '37, providing musical backgrounds for the readings. Masks, designed by Professor Raymond M. Weaver, and illuminated by tall red candlesticks, served as visual stimulation. Treville La Touche '37, in introducing the program, declared, "We think that poetry has been divorced too much from its original meaning. Philolexian Sets May 4 as Deadline For Literary Prize The deadline for contributions to the annual Philolexian prose and poetry contest will be Monday, May 4, it was announced last night by John McAlpin Berryman '36, president of TTie Society. The judges will be Irwin Edman, professor of Philosophy, and Raymond M. Weaver, assistant professor of English. Each contributor will be limited to three poems totalling one hundred lines or less, and one story of 5000 words or less. A prize of $25 will be awarded in each division of the contest. Manuscripts should be turned in to Berryman at the Columbia Review office. The name and address of the contributor and the title of his entry are to appear on a separate sheet of paper.
