Candidates Speak for Philo Philolexian held the most successful meeting of the year last night in Earl Hall when admission to the society was thrown open to Freshmen. The following Freshmen spoke for admission: T. C. Morgan, C. Hershenstein, V. K. W. Koo, D. Armstrong, W. H. Sellew, McA. Coleman, A. S. Moses, G. Hawley, W. H. D. Pell. Following these speeches, the annual oratorical contest was held. The speeches were of a high character and well delivered. C. L. Williams 1906 was awarded first prize for his oration on "Reform in American Politics." The second prize was won by P. B. Tripp 1906, with "The Revolution in China," and W. M. Schwarz 1907 was third, speaking on "The Adams Family as Statesmen." Mr. A. deV. Tassin acted as judge. After the literary program had been completed, an informal social meeting was held, during which refreshments were served.

Immigration Discussed at Philo At a meeting of Philolexian held last night, it was decided that the society advance $lOO to the Debating Union for the intercollegiate debates on the condition that as much as possible be returned from the proceeds of the debate with Cornell. January 11,1907 was the date arranged for the Coles prize competition. A debate on the following question was then held: "Resolved that immigration be further restricted." P. W. H. Philolexian Prize Announced At a well attended meeting of thcPhilolexian Literary Society held ir. ORATORS IN COMPETITION Final Speeches for Curtis Medals—Mr. Parker Discusses Event Columbia's orators will meet in Earl Hall at 4 o'clock this afternoon in the final competition for the Curtis Medals. Preliminary trials, at which ten men spoke, were held on March 28, four men being selected to make the second appearance. Each of the two upper classes has an equal representation, the speakers today being F. A. Higgins and A. J. Kilmer of the Senior class, and V. K. W. Koo and I. H. Levinthal of 1909. Prominent Sons of Columbia VI-KYUIN WELLINGTON KOO '09, Head of Chinese Delegation to the Disarmament Conference. Occupying a prominent place in the affairs of the world is the head of the Chinese delegation to the Disarmament Conference, Vi-Kyuin Wellington Koo 'O9, who was not only a remarkable student while at Columbia, but, in Addition, an active man on the Morningside Campus. Koo was born in Shanghai, China, on January 29, 1888, and was educated at the Anglo-Chinese College in Shanghai. He also attended St. John's College in Shanghai before he came to America. He arrived in this country just twenty-four hours before the time scheduled for an entrance examination in mathematics at Columbia and with no preparation whatsoever he took the examination and received a mark of 98 ih it.
