DEBATING SOCIETIES THE weekly meeting of the Barnard Literary Association was held on Thursday evening, April 7th. The oration was delivered by C. J. Ogden, a humorous selection was read by D. H. Smith, and Cane and Hall spoke extemporaneously. The question for debate was, '' Resolved , that a censorship of the press should be established." Messrs. Cole and Ross, who supported the affirmative, received the decision over Messrs. Erskine and Giddings. It was decided to hold the annual Spring dinner at the Hotel Marie Antoinette, on Tuesday evening, April 13th. PHILOLEXIAN SOCIETY. "pHE Philolexian Society held its first meeting of the year on Friday night, October 7th. The men who were chosen to represent the Society in the Debating Union, was Messrs. Baker, '99, Geoffrey Parsons, '99, and France, 1900. A Program Committee, consisting of B. M. L. Ernst, '99, and Ernest Cardozo, '99, was also elected. After the regular business meeting was adjourned, an impromptu debate was held, in which nearly all of the members took part. DEBATE WITH CHICAGO THIS EVENING A good sized crowd gave the debating team an enthusiastic send-off last Tuesday, and the men started on their trip in the best of spirits for the hard task before them. For their debate this evening they have been trained in accordance with the "Columbia method," which has been the great cause of our success in the past. The defeat of Chicago last year, in spite of our having an apparently hopeless case, was clearly due to our combining a fair amount of good form and prepared speaking with a clear, hardhitting style of arguing. With an equal question this year, our men should be able to overcome the handicap of debating away from home, and win out with a safe margin. Philolexian Society Elections The Philolexian Society closed the debating- year on Friday night with a very enthusiastic meeting. The Society held a convention for nominating a Democratic presidential candidate; the names of Dewey and Bryan were urgently advocated on the platforms of gold and silver respectively; the voting showed that the majority favored the nomination of Dewey. The semi-annual elections of the Society were also held, resulting as follows: President (re-elected), M. H. Cardozo, Jr., '01; vice-president, C. S. Forbes, 'oi; secretary, P. THE DEBATING TEAMS Records of the Men Who Debated Last Night in Lenox Lyceum —Sketch of the Columbia Case Columbia was represented in the intercollegiate debate last night by E. A. Cardozo, C. A. Baker, and B. M. L. Ernst. The Cornell speakers were R. S. Kent, S. S. Lowenthal, and M. M. Wyvell. At Cornell the debating team is made up of the best men in the annual contest for the debate prize left by the class of '94. This prize is awarded after a series of debates, in the last of which the number of competitors is reduced to six or seven. PENN DEBATE TONIGHT Second Annual Debate with the University of Pennsylvania to be Held at Lenox Lyceum—Records of the Speakers. Columbia and Pennsylvania will hold their second debate at Lenox Lyceum at 8.15 this evening. The subject, which was selected by Columbia, will be "Resolved, That an Amendment to the Constitution of the United States Providing for a Change in the Present Method of Treaty-making is Undesirable/'' Pennsylvania chose the negative side and Columbia will take the affirmative. The teams will be composed of three speakers. Each man will speak twice and will have twelve minutes for his direct speech and six minutes for rebutttal. The first debate with Pennsylvania was held last year in Philadelphia, on the subject of ship subsidies and resulted in a victory for Pennsylvania. Philo Centennial. A meeting of the Philolexian Centennial Celebration Committee was held Tuesday evening in the Library. Notes were read from the members of the Advisory Committee, and the date for holding the meeting was decided ;>n. Following the custom sanctioned by the constitution of the society adopted in 1820, the 17th of May was chosen. The celebration will consist of a reunion meeting and a dinner. The committee followed the advice of Mr. John B. Pine and President Butler in selecting Mr. William Dudley Foulke, Civil Service Commissioner at Washington, is the orator at the meeting. Mr. Pine will be asked to preside at this meeting, while Dean Van Amringe will be urged to act as toastmaster it the dinner. A history of the society is being written by E. A. Philo Prize Awarded At the meeting of Philolexian last night the annual prize debate and the trials for the Philo team to debate with Barnard took place. The speeches were all of high excellence and it was only after lengthy discussion that the judges, B. M. L. Ernst 1901 and C. A. Baker 1902 L. were able to announce that the prize contest resulted in a tie between M. F. Lawton 1904 and G. W. Tucker, Jr., 1905. Lawton and Tucker were assigned places on the Philolexian team with R. R. Loening 1904 as the third member and C. L. Williams 1906 as alternate.

About College A great deal of interest is being taken in debating this year. The officers of the Union, composed of three members from Barnard and three from Philolexian, have been attempting for some time to elect officers. They are awaiting the appointment of a Freshman representative to release the dead-lock. Professor Hallock, of the Physics Department, has recently received a sum of money from Secretary Eangley, of the Smithsonian Institute, for the purpose of carrying on the investigations in acoustics, which Professor Hallock has undertaken. The money comes from the well known Hodgkins Fund. An elaborate system of electrical clocks and bells, to ring at the beginning and end of every lecture hour, is being put through all the University buildings.
