DEBATING SOCIETIES THE weekly meeting of the Barnard Literary Association was held on Thursday evening, April 7th. The oration was delivered by C. J. Ogden, a humorous selection was read by D. H. Smith, and Cane and Hall spoke extemporaneously. The question for debate was, '' Resolved , that a censorship of the press should be established." Messrs. Cole and Ross, who supported the affirmative, received the decision over Messrs. Erskine and Giddings. It was decided to hold the annual Spring dinner at the Hotel Marie Antoinette, on Tuesday evening, April 13th. Mr. Ringwalt of the Rhetoric Department,and Mr. Geoffrey Parsons of the Philolexian Society, will be the guests of the Barnard. PHILOLEXIAN SOCIETY The Philolexian Society held its regular meeting of the year last Friday evening. The officers, elected last June, for the first term are : President, M. H. France, 1900; Vice-Presi-dent, Joseph H. Buhler, 1901 ; Secretary, Michael H. Cardozo, Jr., 1901; Treasurer, Walter J. Heiman, 1901. Messrs. France, Strunsky and Cardozo were elected as the Admission Committee for the ensuing year; and Messrs. Wortman, Forbes and Buhler were chosen as the Appointment Committee. Trials for admission to the Society will be held next Friday evening, October 13 th. All members of the University are cordially invited to speak.

PHILOLEXIAN SOCIETY Team chosen for Intersociety Debate— Society Elections The regular meeting of the Philolexian Society was held last Friday evening, November 10. In the absence of the President and Vice-Presi-dent, the Secretary, Cardozo, 1901 presided. The literary exercises of the evening consisted of trials for the annual intersociety debate, on December 5. The question for debate was, Resolved, That Congress, free from constitutional limitation, should so legislate as to illegalize trusts. Coan, 1900, Telzy, 1903, and Dudley, 1901, spoke on the affirmative, while the negative was supported by Seligsberg, 'O2, Ottenberg, 'O2, Moses, 'O3, and Cardozo, 'Ol. Philolexian Society At the Philolexian meeting last Friday evening A. Wortmann, 'O3, delivered an oration on "Vice in New York;" Strunsky, 'OO, made an extempore speech on the same subject. Both men pointed out the futility of the present crusade. McMurray, 'OO, read an essay on the "Aim of Life," setting forth the doctrine that "the purpose of the individual is to do what he can for the elevation of his race and age." The debate, "Resolved that Mr.McKinley should be renominated, was participated in by Bradshaw,'o2 L., Coan, 'OO, Seligsberg, 'O2, and Butler, 'O3. Wood, Conklin and Wolfe, all of 'O2 L., were elected to membership. The subject for the annual prize debate was chosen: "Resolved, that the U. S. should immediately establish free trade with Porto Rico." The meeting this week will be held on Thursday evening to avoid conflict with the gymnastic contest.

Philolexian Prize Debate Last Friday Evening the Philolexian Society held its Annual Prize Debate Contest. The subject for debate was "Resolved, That the United States should immediately establish free trade with Porto Rico." M. J. France, 'oo won the first prize, and the second was divided between S. Strunsky, 'oo, and G. H. Butler, 'O3. Within the past month the prize essay, and oration contests have also taken place. Prof. G. R. Carpenter awarded the first essay prize to P Coan, 'OO, and the second to C. S. Forbes, 'ci. M. J. France won the prize oration competition, A. Gross, 'O3, being second, and S. A. Tellzy, 'O3, third. It was decided that the society should hold its annual dinner in May, and the president was empowered to appoint a committee to make the necessary arrangements.

Philolexian Society Elections The Philolexian Society closed the debating- year on Friday night with a very enthusiastic meeting. The Society held a convention for nominating a Democratic presidential candidate; the names of Dewey and Bryan were urgently advocated on the platforms of gold and silver respectively; the voting showed that the majority favored the nomination of Dewey. The semi-annual elections of the Society were also held, resulting as follows: President (re-elected), M. H. Cardozo, Jr., '01; vice-president, C. S. Forbes, 'oi; secretary, P. Dudley, Sp.; treasurer, G. H. Butler, 'O3. Delegates to the Debating Union are Cardozo, Forbes and Dudley. C. A. Cardozo, B. M. L. Ernst and C. A.
