DEBATING SOCIETIES THE weekly meeting of the Barnard Literary Association was held on Thursday evening, April 7th. The oration was delivered by C. J. Ogden, a humorous selection was read by D. H. Smith, and Cane and Hall spoke extemporaneously. The question for debate was, '' Resolved , that a censorship of the press should be established." Messrs. Cole and Ross, who supported the affirmative, received the decision over Messrs. Erskine and Giddings. It was decided to hold the annual Spring dinner at the Hotel Marie Antoinette, on Tuesday evening, April 13th. Mr. Ringwalt of the Rhetoric Department,and Mr. Geoffrey Parsons of the Philolexian Society, will be the guests of the Barnard. PHILOLEXIAN SOCIETY. "pHE Philolexian Society held its first meeting of the year on Friday night, October 7th. The men who were chosen to represent the Society in the Debating Union, was Messrs. Baker, '99, Geoffrey Parsons, '99, and France, 1900. A Program Committee, consisting of B. M. L. Ernst, '99, and Ernest Cardozo, '99, was also elected. After the regular business meeting was adjourned, an impromptu debate was held, in which nearly all of the members took part. The Philolexian officers for 1898-1899, are, as was stated last Spring, as follows: Geoffrey Parsons, President; M. J. France, Vice-presi-dent; Otto Hinck, Secretary; Theophilus Parsons, Treasurer.

Debating News. The Debating Union has elected its officers for the ensuing year. They are Gerard Roberts, '9B, President; and Geoffrey Parsons, '99, Secretary. As announced last week, all applicants for membership to the Philolexian Society are required to speak in a trial debate to be held on November 18th. Each side of the question (the municipal ownership of street railroads) will be opened by a member of the society, and after that applicants may make speeches, not to exceed seven minutes, in favor of either side of the question. A committee of three members of the society will be present as judges, and only such applicants as they may approve are eligible to election to the society.

THE JOINT DEBATE. only joint debate that will be held this year between the Barnard Literary Association and the Philolexian Society took place at 8.15 last night in Prof. Chandler's big lecture room, in Havemeyer Hall. The question which the two teams argued was: "Resolved, That the Judges of the State Courts should be appointed by the Governor, subject to approval by the State Senate, to serve during good behavior; rather than that they should be elected by popular vote for a term of years." The representatives from Barnard, which supported the affirmative, were Messrs. Hull, Fackenthal and Ross, while Messrs. Baker, Cardozo and France spoke for Philolexian. Geoffrey Parsons, '99, President of the Debating Union, presided, and the decision was rendered by Prof. Jackson, Prof. Hyslop and Mr. Brodt.
