"SESSION OF THE SENATE" Philolexian Tries a New Method of Conducting Its Weekly Debates. To increase the interest in the weekly meetings, the Philolexian Society has decided to vary the cut-and-dried order of debate by holding a "Session of the Senate." The idea is to imitate the method of procedure in the United States Senate. Men from other states than New York are supposed to take positions characteristic of their section of the country. If there is any section of the country not represented in this way some of the New York members will undertake to represent it. The Senate rules adapted to the size of the society and the limited time govern the discussion. This variation of the society's regular program was tried Wednesday evening as an experiment, but it proved quite successful and will probably be repeated in the future. The Debating Clubs Barnard held its last meeting of the year Wednesday evening. A. S. Lawrence, 1902, 'delivered Robespierre's speech in the Convention on the "Trial of Louis XVI." For the essay K. B. Halstead, 1902, read the "Imaginary Interview," by Walter Lavish Slander. The first extempore speech was by H. M. Hays, 1902, on "The Process of Taking a Class Picture." F. M. Philolexian At the regular meeting of the Philolexian Society held last Wednesday evening ten new members were elected to the society. During the present week committees will be appointed by the president to make arrangements for the debate with the Barnard Literary Association and the 23d Street Y. M. C. A. The first will take place in December at the Y. M. C. A. Auditorium, but 110 date has been settled upon for the other. The oration of the evening was delivered by B. H. Ridder, who chose for his subject "William McKinley," and by treating it from an original point of view made an interesting oration on a theme so often covered. C. G. Fink read an essay on "Modern Literary Criticism." The extempore speeches were given by S. M. Isaacs and A. L. Strasser. The debate was dispensed with.

Philolexian Meets At the meeting of the society on Wednesday evening, W. H. Grasse, 1904 L., read an essay on "Taxation of Franchise." B. V. Moore, 19°4 L., and C. G. Fink, 1903, made extempore speeches. The debate on the question, "Resolved, That Congress should establish a national statutory university in Washington," was the warmest contest witnessed by the society this season. N. K. Whitin delivered an oration on "President Nicholas M. Butler," and T. L. Perry read an essay on "Germany and Venezuela." M. C. Ansorge spoke extemporaneously on the "New York Central Catastrophe." A practice debate for the team against the Y. M. C. A. followed. G. H. Butler, J. H. Esser, and B. V. Moore, the regular team, speaking on the negative, and P. Dudley, A. L. Strasser, and J. C. Jackson on the affirmative. The contest with the Y. M. C. A. will take place on January 24th.

Philo's. Last Meeting The Philolexian Society held the last regular meeting of the year 011 Tuesday evening. In the number of members present, and the manner in which they entered into the business of the meeting, little more could have been wished, and this last convocation of the society stands out as an agreeable break in the long series of lethargic meetings held this winter. Philolexian At the meeting of the Philolexian -Society last night there was an unusually lacge attendance. The program of the evening consisted of an'oration by B. H. Ridder,.. 1903, and essay by C. G. Fink, 19035., extempore sp'eeches by P. Dudley, 1903, and J. R. Higbee, 1905; and a debate. This debate was upon the question: "Resolved, That the President's appointment of negroes to office in States where public opinion is opposed to such a policy is unwise." The affirmative side was sustained by Malmberg and Jetter, while Tucker and Perry supported the negative. The debate was awarded to the negative.

PHILOLEXIAN SOCIETY Team chosen for Intersociety Debate— Society Elections The regular meeting of the Philolexian Society was held last Friday evening, November 10. In the absence of the President and Vice-Presi-dent, the Secretary, Cardozo, 1901 presided. The literary exercises of the evening consisted of trials for the annual intersociety debate, on December 5. The question for debate was, Resolved, That Congress, free from constitutional limitation, should so legislate as to illegalize trusts. Coan, 1900, Telzy, 1903, and Dudley, 1901, spoke on the affirmative, while the negative was supported by Seligsberg, 'O2, Ottenberg, 'O2, Moses, 'O3, and Cardozo, 'Ol.
