Philo Oratorical Contest The annual prize oratorical contest of the Philolexian Society was held last Tuesday evening. The contestants and their orations were as follows: James Myers, John Hay's "Eulogy on President McKinleyß. H. Ridder, an original oration on ''Arctic ExplorationA. L. Strasser, Daniel Webster's "Reply to CalhounT. L. Perry, an original oration on "The Philolexian SocietyA. M. Ansorge, "Mark Anthony's Funeral Oration;" S. M. Isaacs, John Hay's "Eulogy on President McKinley." The committee of judges was composed of H. W. Pitkin, H. L. Hannah and Dr. McCracken. It awarded first prize to Ansorge, second to Ridder, and third to Strasser.

Philolexian's New Officers A meeting of the Philolexian Society was held last evening in Earl Hall. The important business before the society was the election of a president and secretary. This had been made necessary by the resignation of the president, James Myers 1904, and the secretary, James Taylor 1905. The vacant positions were filled respectively by the unanimous election of W. A. Tice 1904 and R. K. Goodlatte 1906. An Appointment and Program Committee, consisting of W. F. Lawton 1904,, chairman; J. L. Beha 1904, W. S. Bryant 1904, and W. R. Porter 1906, was> appointed by the president.

INLOVATION IN C. U. C. A. Earl Hall Authorities Plan Many New Courses —Classes in All University Departments By way of starting the work of the Columbia University Christian Association, two conferences were held at noon on September 17th and 18th. The first was of a devotional nature, the discussion on the details of this year's plans being left to the second meeting. The reception to Freshmen will be held in Earl Hall, Monday, September 28th, at 4 p. m. Dean Van Amringe will preside, and among the speakers will be Dean Goetze of the Schools of Applied Science, and representative 'men from all branches of student activities, who will address the meeting on their special subjects. HONOR EX-SECRETARY MYERS Farewell Supper Given Him in Earl 1 Hall Last Night—Speeches and Cheers for Old and New Leaders. Last evening a farewell supper was gives to Mr. James Myers by his associates in the Christian Association. About thirty-five friends assembled in Earl Hall at half-past six. Proceedings were opened by a cheer for Mr. James Myers and another for Mr. Reuben Meyers who has been elected to fill the place as graduate secretary of the Association. After a light supper which was served to the guests seated about the room, Chaplain Knox was called on for a speech. He was followed by Mr. R. A. Meyers, Mr. Keiler, treasurer of the Association, and Dr. Meylan, all of whom spoke in high praise of Mr. Myers' work and gave a word of welcome for his successor. In the number of members present, and the manner in which they entered into the business of the meeting, little more could have been wished, and this last convocation of the society stands out as an agreeable break in the long series of lethargic meetings held this winter. Philolexian Prize Oratorical Contest The annual prize oratorical contest of the Philolexian Literary Society took place in Earl Hall at the regular meeting last night. The orations presented were of a very high order, and were unanimously declared to be the best ever delivered in the history of the society. The contestants were evenly matched, and it was very difficult for the judges to decide upon the successful competitors. The following men participated in the contest: B. H. Philolexian's Annual Dinner Philolexian held its annual dinner in University Hall last night. It was originally intended to give this dinner in conjunction with Barnard Literary Association at the Murray Hill, but this plan was abandoned. Speeches were made by E. S. Whitin 1904, the retiring president of Philo; J. Myers 1904, the president-elect; W. S. Carpenter 1904, who represented Barnard; G. W. Tucker, the incoming vice-presi-dent; G. H. Butler, Jr., 1903, B. H. Ridder 1903, W. B. Devoe 1906, W. F. J. Piel 1905, and several others. The following 1906 men were elected to membership in the society. C. T. Gordon, H. Thomas, O. B. Debating Union Officers The Debating Union, at a meeting yesterday afternoon, elected the following officers for the ensuing year: President, W. S. Carpenter 1904; secretary, J. A. Taylor 1905. The Union is at present considering the formation of a debating league with Cornell and Pennsylvania. About six weeks ago delegates from the three universities met and drew up a tentative agreement, and Pennsylvania suggested a modification of it which is now under discussion. The delegates forming the Union are: from Philolexian, J. Myers 1904, G. W. Tucker 1905 and J. A. Taylor 1905; from Barnard, W. S. Carpenter 1904 D. C. Hughes 1904 and O. R. Houston 1904.

Philolexian Debating Society Meeting The meeting of Philolexian last evening took the form of a nominating convention for mayor of New York. A number of candidates were proposed by the various members present, among them, Low, Grout, McClellan and Jerome. A spirited discussion followed the nominations. The resignation of J. Myers 1904 from the office of president has been accepted, and G. W. Tucker 1905> h as been elected in his place.
