ROBERTS IS CHOSEN AS PHILO PRESIDENT Editor of Varsity Will Head Literary Society for Coming Year. Edmund Philip Roberts '26, of Brooklyn, New York, was elected president of Philolexian Society for 19251926. At tihe same time, Allen H. Keller, '26 also of Brooklyn, was named vice-president. Roberts, who entered Philolexian, in his Sophomore year, has been connected with several Campus activities. In addition to being editor of the next Varsity, he is on the new King's Crown Board of Governors. Charles H. Mueller, of Marietta, Pa. is the new secretary and Phillip B. Thurston '27, of New York City, will act as treasurer. These officers will preside over the next meeting of the society which will be held shortly after College opens next Fall. PHILO ANNOUNCES LITERARY AWARDS Reid, Marshall and Smith Winners in Poetry, Essay and Fiction Contests. Annual awards of poetry, essay and fiction prizes were made at the Philolexian Society dinner given Saturday night at the Livingston Club, 306 West 109 th Street. The dinner in addition to being the occasion of the prize awards was given in celebration of the one hundred and twenty-sixth anniversary of the founding of the society. The short story prize for this year went to James E. Reid '2B, the judge of the contest being professor Steeves of the English Department. Reid is a member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, and during the past year was editor-in-chief of Varsity. Alan Marshall, recently elected editor-in-chief of Varsity, received the essay prize. He is a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. The essay competition this year was judged by Professor Dick of the English Department.…

Philolexian Spons Contest Literary Aspirants Urged to Enter; Freshman Competition Inaugurated With a financial bait in the offing, the Columbian Philolexian Society announced yesterday a sweeping literary contest to arouse any dormant creative ability in the minds of those potentially promising collegiate authors from '4O to '43. At the end of the literary rainbow for the Freshman tyro lies a prize of twenty dollars, which is supplied, like all the other annual Philolexian contest prizes, by a fund held "in perpetuum". This "most promising Freshman" will be chosen by reason of the excellence of his manuscript of fiction, non-fiction or poetry which has been submitted before the deadline of March 4, 1940. Philo Awards Honor Three Prizes totaling $7O have been awarded to three Columbia students, Harry Rosenstein, Jr. '4l, James Knight '4O, and Rudolph R. von Abele '43, for their winning contributions in the recent contest sponsored by Philolexian Society, one of the oldest collegiate literary groups in the country. Rosenstein, editor of The Columbia Review and a Co-Editor of next year's Jester, received $25 for his short story "A Man and Miss Florabelle", which has been published in the Spring issue of Review. Finding that none of the essays submitted were worthy of an award, the judges recommended that the $25 originally set aside for the essay winner be given instead for the second-best short story.
