1896-05-13 Philolexian Society. won second prize for essay
Philolexian Society. HE Philolexian Society of Columbia College closed its year's work 011 Friday, April 29th, with its membership equal to the constitutional limit. The new officers elected at the meeting of that date were : —President, C. F. Wheaton, '97 ; Vice-President, C. C. Burke, '9B; Secretary, Theo. Parsons, '99; Treasurer, C. A. Baker, '99. At the same meeting the results of the society's prize contests were announced. These prizes are the income of a fund of $1,500 presented by the alumni on the Society's fiftieth anniversary in 1852. They are awarded for orations essays and debates. The successful contestants are as follows: — For the Oration. —First, G. Parsons, '99; second, A., R. Lesinsky, '96; third, J. M. Proskaner, '96. 1898-04-13 DEBATING SOCIETIES judged the oratorical contest
DEBATING SOCIETIES THE weekly meeting of the Barnard Literary Association was held on Thursday evening, April 7th. The oration was delivered by C. J. Ogden, a humorous selection was read by D. H. Smith, and Cane and Hall spoke extemporaneously. The question for debate was, '' Resolved , that a censorship of the press should be established." Messrs. Cole and Ross, who supported the affirmative, received the decision over Messrs. Erskine and Giddings. It was decided to hold the annual Spring dinner at the Hotel Marie Antoinette, on Tuesday evening, April 13th. Mr. Ringwalt of the Rhetoric Department,and Mr. Geoffrey Parsons of the Philolexian Society, will be the guests of the Barnard. About College W. B. Crowell, '96 Z,., has been looking for candidates for the Crescent eleven among Columbia's athletes. '97 Mines has elected its representatives to the '97 Columbian board. The men elected are the following: J. L- Fearing, H. H. Armstead, C. H. Fulton, T. De Coppet, and H. B. Mitchell. The Arts have not had their election as yet. A benefit will be given Forrest D. Carr, at Dr. Baton's Church, 45th Street and Fifth Avenue, on the evening of April Ist. The Mandolin Club has been asked to play. The 24th of April has been decided on as the date for the '96 class dinner. The place has not yet been settled. The committee consists of R. H. Halsey (chairman), Manfred Uhl, and R. A. M'Culloch.
