BARZUN IS WINNER OF ORATORY PRIZE Undergraduate Wins Bust of Washington for Speech On The Mind. At the fourth quadrennial oratorical contest of the Philolexian Society, held in John Jay Hall last Thursday, Jacques M. Barzun '27 won the J. Ackerman Coles centennial prize. This prize consists of a cast of the heroic-sized bust of George Washington made by Houdon. Four were entered in the contest, which Barzun won with a speech on "The Gospel of Loyalty and the International Mind". The other ' contestants were Frederic Webster Case '27, Warner H. Mendel '3OL and Kendall Kimberland '29. The contest was judged by Professor Dixon Ryan Fox and Parker T. Moon, both alumni of the society, and Phillip B. Thurston '27, president of the society. PHILO WILL GATHER AT ANNUAL BANQUET Literary Society Will Hold Traditional Affair at Columbia Club. Philolexian will hold- its traditional banquet at the Columbia Club on Saturday, Feb. 1, it was announced by Boris, B. Shishkin '3O, secretary of the Columbia Literary Society. Philo Celebrates 135th Year; Hawkes, Edman Speakers Club Was Dramatic Society for More Than a Decade By MILTON CRANE Retiring President of Philolexian Philolexian Society celebrates ifs 135 th anniversary last Wednesday evening with a banquet at the Men's Faculty Club. Both Alumni and undergraduates attended the reunion of the third oldest college literary society in America. As the feature of the festivites, Philo elected three honorary members: Dean Herbert E. Hawkes, Irwin Edman, professor of Philosophy, and Lionel Trilling, instructor in English. Milton Crane '37, retiring president of the Society, presided at the banquet and proposed the election of the guests.
