The speeches are excellent and the men who will deliver them can talk even better than they can write. Barnard Literary Association, under whose auspices the affair is given, will hold a reception to the judges and to the speakers and their friends after the contest, refreshments will be served. PHILO MAKES PLANS FOR BIG SMOKER Alumni and Active Members to Get Together.—Arrange for Curtis Medals. To bring together all the members and alumni of the society and to make plans for the year, Philolexian has decided upon a smoker to be held on Wednesday night, February 23. It is planned to make the smoker one of the big events of the year. All of the society's alumni, both on and off the campus, will be invited, and the smoker will be in the nature of a reunion. At a meeting last night a committee consisting of C. P. Ivins 'lB, F. R. Coudert, Jr., 'lB, and A. K. Paddock 'l7, was appointed to arrange for the affair. The smoker will probably be held in Earl Hall. Some prominent speakers will be secured. LIVE SUBJECTS SELECTED Oratory in This Year's Curtis Medals Contest Should Surpass Previous Efforts Social Achievement, Child Slavery, Woman Suffrage, and Democracy will be the subjects discussed at the annual Curtis Medals Contest in Earl Half, Wednesday evening. COUNCIL ELECTS NEW OFFICERS And Discuss Syracuse Debate This Debating Council met in Earl Hall yesterday noon and formally installed L. Frazer 'I3L as the delegate to next year's Council from Delta Sigma Rho. Then the newly elected delegates from Barnard Literary Association and Philolexian Society chose the following officers for the season: E. Colby 'l2, President: J. K. McCormick 'l3, Secretary; and O. C. Isbell 'l2, Treasurer. After the new president had taken his place, he announced the appointment of A. W. Macmahon 'l2 as Chairman in charge of Freshman Debating. Old business was gone over and the Syracuse debate discussed.
