Expels Burke From Philo Society Drops Former President and Refuses To Explain Action The expulsion of John Burke '32, former president of Philolexian, and two other members at a meeting early this Week marks the Society's latest effort to rid itself of dissention. Burke, who was "deposed" by the group in the literary war which split the organization's ranks into two factions, was the leader of a block opposed to James Leippert '33, Philo's present head. The Peithologian Society, ancient rival of Philolexian which revived last month, was the bone of centention in this latests squabble. Burke, sponsored a movement to allow the Peitho group use of the Philolexian room in John Jay one night each week. Expulsion Amendment Passed Whereupon Leippert, according to Burke, became so incensed that he had an amendment passed enabling the Society to expel a member, a thing which had never been…

Will Debate Philolexian Philomathean Society Of Pennsylvania Faces Campus Organization When Philolexian Society's debaters meet the forensic team of the Philomathean Society of the University of Pennsylvania tomorrow, a tradition of long standing will be revived after a lapse of five years. The subject which will be discussed is "Resolved: That All Forms of Censorship Should Be Abolished." The visitors will uphold the affirmative of the proposition, while Philolexian will defend the negative. Fox Will Preside Professor Dixon Ryan Fox of the Department of History will preside at the debate, which will be held at 8 P.M. in room 301 Philosophy. E. R. Lorch of the Department of Mathematics will be a judge of the contest, as will two other men not yet selected. Philo Holds Surprise Vote On Officers Society Chooses New Officials at Regular Meeting After First Denying Election Would Be Held By FON W. BOARDMAN JR. Despite an official announcement from its president, James C. Leippert '33, on Wednesday that the annual election of the Philolexian Society scheduled for that evening had been postponed until tonight, the group held the election late Wednesday after making a decision that the results would not be made public until this evening, it was learned yesterday. However, when news of what had occurred Wednesday evening leaked out, officers of the society decided to make official announcement of the election results and Spectator was informed that William Setteducati '33 had been chosen president to succeed Leippert. Gross Named Board Head Student Representatives Elect Rhodes Secretary For Coming Year Harry M. Gross '33 of Middletown, Md., was elected chairman of the Board of Student Representatives and Peter C. Rhodes '33 of Great Ndck, L.1., was chosen secretary at the first meeting of the newly elected members yesterday. Regarding the policy of Student Board for the coming year, Gross stated, "We, the newly elected members of Student Board, who will assume office next September, feel it a duty to fulfill our promises to the student body. Asks Cooperation of College "We will do our utmost to make it a functioning and vital part of college interest, and a practical outlet of student opinion. Two Awarded Fellowships To England Chiappe and Rhodes Receive Kellett PrizeWill Study in Europe For Two Years-Both Were Campus Figures ■ Andrew J. Chiappe '33 of Long Island City, L. 1., and Peter C. Rhodes '33 of Great Barrington, Mass., have been awarded the Kellett Fellowships to Cambridge and Oxford Universities respectively, Acting Dean Nicholas McD. McKnight announced yesterday. The fellowships established two years ago under the will of Euretta J. Kellett bear an annual minimum stipend of $2,000 for two years. They are awarded to "such graduates of the College as are adjudged to have shown exceptional proficiency in the study of the humanities." Taking Graduate Work Both students are now in the graduate school of the University studying for their M. A. degrees. Chiappe specializes in English and Rhodes majors in History. Undergraduate Balloting Begins Today; More Candidates Announce Platforms Representatives' Posts Sought By Record Number-Voting Lists For Other Offices Are Well Filled Voting List Is Large In Annual Balloting for Board Posts A record number of votes will probably be cast in the campus balloting in the Spring elections which will begin today at noon in John Jay Hall and will continue until 2 o'clock. Voting will also be held tomorrow and Friday between the same hours under the revised system of elections proposed by Student Board earlier in the week. An unusually large number of men were nominated for the five positions on the Student Board of representatives. Undergraduates will vote on twenty-nine men in that section of the elections.
