Chief Judge, New York Court of Appeals; Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States; author of The Nature of the Judicial Process. Benjamin Nathan Cardozo (CC 1889, M.A. 1890, Columbia Law 1889–1891) entered Columbia at fifteen, took Phi Beta Kappa, and passed the New York bar without a law degree, which the state then permitted after two years of study. Two decades of appellate practice in Manhattan produced, in 1913, an election to the state Supreme Court, and within weeks a designation to the New York Court of Appeals, where he served for eighteen years and closed his tenure as Chief Judge. Herbert Hoover appointed him to the Supreme Court of the United States in 1932 to succeed Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.; he sat with Brandeis and Stone as one of the "Three Musketeers" of the liberal bloc upholding the New Deal until his death in 1938. His opinions were unusually readable for judicial writing. A few of his better sentences still surface in Philolexian's weekly debates ("Justice is not to be taken by storm. She is to be wooed by slow advances.") and in the censor's reports afterward ("The judge is not the knight-errant, roaming at will in pursuit of his own ideal of beauty or of goodness.").

About College 'T7IGHTY-NINE has sold its eight-oared shell for $75. THE Annual Regatta of the Boat Club will be held May 3d, on the Harlem River. THE Class of 'B9 has chosen Mr. B. N. Cardozo to the post of Commencement Orator. THE Gun Club held an open contest for positions on the College Team, on Saturday the 13th, at Claremont, N. J. DR. GREER'S Chapel Address was one of the best of the series. The audience was not as large as it should have been. A NUMBER of picturesque signs adorned with quaint legends have made their appearance on the grass plots of our campus. Now that the Miner and Columbiad are both out, the artistic notices with which the walls were beautified, are greatly missed.
