PREP ORATORS TO COMPETE Speakers To Be University's Guests — State-Wide Interest Shown In Columbian Contests This evening at Earl Hall will occur the University's final Interscholastic Speaking Contest deciding the winner of the series of competitions it has conducted for the secondary schools in the state of New York. The contestants arrive in the city today and under the direction of the student committee of thirteen are being entertained at the University's expense. Tomorrow morning they will be conducted over the campus and shown the various opportunities that Columbia offers. PHILO HOLDS ANNUAL DINNER Up-State Schoolboys Guests Immediately after the Interscholastic Speaking Contest last night the members of the Philolexian Literary Society gathered at Murray's restaurant for their 110 th annual dinner. A large body of the alumni were present and the judges and speakers at the contest were the guests of the evening. The newly elected officers spoke—by way of inaugural address, and Judge Gerard and Judge Chester as well as the winner of the schoolboy contest delivered short addresses. After the speeches the crowd turned itself to singing Columbia songs.

Prominent Sons of Columbia JAMES WATSON GERARD '90 Former American Ambassador to Germany and Justice of the New York Supreme Court. Performing diplomatic work during an international crisis, that received unbounded praise from prominent men in this country, James Watson Gerard '9O, served for four years as the American Ambassador to Germany. Mr. Gerard was born at Geneseo, N. Y., in 1867. He was educated at Columbia College and while there he was a member of the Philolexian Society and the debating team. He received his A. B. at Columbia in 1890 and his A. M. in 1891. He attended the New York Law School ( and upon his graduation in 1892, he k was admitted to the New York Bar. He began his law practice in this city.
