PHILO YEAR ENDS WITH BIG BANQUET Society Honored by Presence of Prof. Odell and Dr. E. StaggWhitin '01. The final event of Philolexian Literary Society, its banquet at the Columbia Club, was a huge success. Twenty-eight members and initiates were present. Among them were Dr. E. Stagg-Whitin 'Ol and Professor Odell of the English Department, who has been elected honorary member of the Society. Dr. Whitin was host of the organization -for the evening, in the course of which he gave a most illuminating speech touching on his experiences in France and at the peace table. Dr. Whitin's speech dealt with the great need of the country at present and in the future for well trained and educated men to handle the stupendous problems of - the future. SOCIETY REPORTS BIG TICKET SALE Fraternity Blocks for Philolexian Show Will Be Reserved Until Tuesday. Fraternity blocks for both the Friday and Saturday night performances of "As You Like It," the Philolexian Show to be produced next week at the Hotel Plaza, will be held only until next Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. There is still an opportunity for fraternities or others to join the patrons' list by the purchase of five orchestra seats or a box. The subscription is $2.00 with a 50-cent reduction for S. A. The Joint Debate. HTHE Eleventh Joint Debate of the three literary societies of Columbia College was held on the evening of April 26th. The exercises commenced at eight o'clock, and before that time about two hundred spectators had assembled in the lecture room of the Law School. The disagreeable weather undoubtedly prevented a larger attendance. The position of presiding officer was filled by Frank H. Field, Peithologian Society, who won first honorable mention in last year's contest. Inter-Society Debate Awarded to Barnard The annual debate between Philolexian Society and Barnard Literary Association was held on Tuesday evening, December 5, in Haverneyer Hall. Philolexian supported the affirmative and Barnard the negative of the question, "Resolved, That trusts are an evil which should receive governmental regulation." The judges : Professor J. B. Moore, Dr. G! C. D. Odell and Mr. P. G. Carleton, decided in favor of Barnard. J. D. Fackenthal, President of the Debating Union, presided and introduced the speakers.
