Editor of the Louisville Courier-Journal; Pulitzer Prize for History for The People's Choice (1934); wartime U.S. cultural attaché in London. Herbert Sebastian Agar (CC 1919) won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1934 for The People's Choice, his revisionist survey of American presidents from Washington to Harding, and spent the next half-decade as editor of the Louisville Courier-Journal, where he became one of the small handful of American editors whose front page mattered to the White House and, more consequentially, one of the loudest Southern voices against isolationism as war approached. In 1941 he moved to London as an aide to Ambassador John Winant and effectively ran the U.S. Embassy's cultural-relations program through the war; he stayed in England for the rest of his life. Twelve more books followed the Pulitzer, on subjects ranging from Lincoln (Abraham Lincoln, 1952) to the collapse of European liberalism (The Price of Union, 1950, and its sequel The Price of Power, 1957) to Sacco and Vanzetti (The Unquiet Grave, 1964). He wrote until his death in Sussex in 1980.
