At the fourth quadrennial oratorical contest of the Philolexian Society, held in John Jay Hall last Thursday, Jacques M. Barzun '27 won the J. Ackerman Coles centennial prize. Expels Burke From Philo Society Drops Former President and Refuses To Explain Action The expulsion of John Burke '32, former president of Philolexian, and two other members at a meeting early this Week marks the Society's latest effort to rid itself of dissention. Burke, who was "deposed" by the group in the literary war which split the organization's ranks into two factions, was the leader of a block opposed to James Leippert '33, Philo's present head. Prize Winners Announced For Boar's Head Reading Coman Leavenworth, Allen Ginsberg, and Theodore Melnechuk are the winners of the $lOO Boar's Head Poetry Contest sponsored jointly by Philolexian and the Columbia Review, it was announced yesterday by John Hollander, outgoing editor of Review. Leavenworth, Ginsberg, and Melnechuk, who are the recipients of a fifty dollar and two twentyfive dollar prizes respectively, will read their verse along with seven other finalists in the contest tonight at 8 o'clock in Earl Hall. Modern Dance Recital Will Mark Philolexians' Revival Philolexian Society of Columbia College will sponsor a dance recital November 15, at 8:30 P.M. in Brander Matthews Hall. Featured on the program will be twelve dances by modern composers including several by members of the Columbia Music Faculty. Judith Martin and Louise Holdsworth, professional dancers, did the choreography for the compositions which they will interpret on the stage for the recital audience. In the year of your graduation, an attempt was made to revive the Philolexian Society by the assistant to the dean, Robert Pinckert '52, himself a former member of the society... But I now see that Bob named two of your classmates to Philo's ranks.' Those esteemed undergraduates were John Alexander and Vic Wolfenstein.
