1931-05-04 PRIZES Awarded to Brown and Leippert in the Philo Literary Competition won prose prize
PRIZES Awarded to Brown and Leippert in the Philo Literary Competition Stanley M. Brown '3l and James G. Leippert '33, have been chosen the winners of the annual Philolexian Literary Competition. The announcement was made Saturday evening by John N. Webb '3l, president of the society, at Philo's annual banquet held in the Blue Grotto of the Columbia Club. Guests of honor at the banquet were Professors Dixon Ryan Fox, George C. D. Odell and Irving W. Raymond and Dr. Dwight C. Miner. Professor Henry K. Dick of the English Department acted as judge for the competition. For the best prose contribution, he chose Brown's short story "Padidba" and for the best poetic contribution he selected Leippert's first four parts of the sequence entitled "The Lost Ones." 4936 Receive Degrees at 177th University Commencement; Class Day Exercises of College Seniors Are Held in McMillin Theatre Action to Ameliorate Conditions Must Be Taken by Youth, Butler Says in Address On 'Progress and Poverty' Before Record Number of Graduating Students Using the title of Henry George's book, "Progress and Poverty," as his text, President Nicholas Murray Butler called for action on the part of youth to eliminate the evils of the present social system, in his address at the 177 th Commencement Exercises of the University this afternoon. Degrees were awarded to the record number of 4936 graduates of the various schools of the University at the ceremonies. A crowd of over 20,000 people thronged the Campus to attend the exercises. Undergraduate Balloting Begins Today; More Candidates Announce Platforms Representatives' Posts Sought By Record Number-Voting Lists For Other Offices Are Well Filled Voting List Is Large In Annual Balloting for Board Posts A record number of votes will probably be cast in the campus balloting in the Spring elections which will begin today at noon in John Jay Hall and will continue until 2 o'clock. Voting will also be held tomorrow and Friday between the same hours under the revised system of elections proposed by Student Board earlier in the week. An unusually large number of men were nominated for the five positions on the Student Board of representatives. Undergraduates will vote on twenty-nine men in that section of the elections. The number of men proposed in the other divisions of the balloting was also large, another record being broken in the election list for the Junior…
