PHILO ANNOUNCES LITERARY AWARDS Reid, Marshall and Smith Winners in Poetry, Essay and Fiction Contests. Annual awards of poetry, essay and fiction prizes were made at the Philolexian Society dinner given Saturday night at the Livingston Club, 306 West 109 th Street. The dinner in addition to being the occasion of the prize awards was given in celebration of the one hundred and twenty-sixth anniversary of the founding of the society. The short story prize for this year went to James E. Reid '2B, the judge of the contest being professor Steeves of the English Department. Reid is a member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, and during the past year was editor-in-chief of Varsity. Alan Marshall, recently elected editor-in-chief of Varsity, received the essay prize. William Erskine Orr '3O was elected president of the Philolexian Society at a business meeting held last Thursday in the Philo room. W. Bradford Smith '3O was chosen vice-president, and Boris Basil Shishkin '3O, secretary. Charles L. Stainback '3O will be treasurer and Joseph A. Danish '3l, librarian. Orr held the office of secretary in the society this semester and was on the production staff of "Fanny's First Play," the show produced by Philo last year. He Is a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. Von Helms Will Address Philolexian This Evening Ernst Freienmuth von Helms '3O will address the Philolexian Society tonight at 8:30 o'clock in 418 John Jay, W. Bradford Smith '3O, acting president of the society, announced yesterday. Mr. von Helms' talk tonight will be devoted to Thomas Mann, contemporary German novelist, winner of the latest Nobel prize for literature. Philolexian unanimously re-elected its four major officers at its semiannual election which was held last Thursday night, it was announced yesterday by William Erskine Orr '3O, who was renamed president.
